McMullen Day is an annual competition held between the Branches of the Australian Hibiscus Society Inc., and the winner holds the trophy for 12 months, and also has the honour of staging the next years competition.
It is held to honour the late Allan & Phyllis McMullen, who were hybridisers of many flowers which we have today, and they lived on the Sunshine Coast here in Queensland Australia, and the competition was started by the Sunshine Coast Branch to honour these 2 members.

The competition requires that each branch benches up to 50 entries, made up of 12 entries in Singles, Doubles, Miniatures and Seedlings, with the proviso that 3 of the seedlings are Miniature seedlings, and 2, Two of a Kind entries, making a total of 50 entries, if a branch cannot make the 50 entries that is OK, but it reduces it chances of getting enough points to win the trophy. Five judges are used, and to win a point a bloom entry  must get at least a tick from 3 or more of the judges.

The 2008 McMullen Day was staged by the Brisbane Branch, who won the 2007 competition, at the Carina Leagues Football Club , and the winner of this years competition is Sunshine Coast Branch with a total of 23 points, next Brisbane Branch with 18 points and Gold Coast Branch with 7 points, and Buderim Branch with 4 points.

I have made 2 pages of the winning blooms for you to look at, just click on the links to take you to the next page.
